Anaesthesia

An anaesthetic is a drug that can be administered by intramuscular (IM) or subcutaneous (SC) injection, by infusion into the veins (intravenous IV ), or by inhalation following intubation (tube in the trachea).

General anaesthesia prevents the animal from moving, feeling pain, or being conscious. They are unaware of their surgery.

Loco-regional anaesthesia is a localised partial anaesthesia that prevents the animal from feeling pain but leaves it conscious.

It is common to use both simultaneously during painful processes.

Veterinarians often use the so-called fixed anaesthesia, which involves injecting products suitable for short procedures. For longer surgeries, gaseous anaesthesia is used; it offers better safety and can be extended as needed.

Any anaesthesia presents a risk, so an individual protocol is developed according to the animal and the type of surgery considered to ensure the best possible safety.

In practice, anaesthesia is multimodal, meaning that different products with different routes of administration are used to minimise the doses of other products and optimise their effect while reducing the risks (for example, intramuscular premedication, intravenous induction, and maintenance gas relays).

The MadeleineVet Veterinary Practice has an operating room on-site with state-of-the-art anaesthesia and essential monitoring equipment. We can manage minor or extensive injuries, biopsies, convenience surgeries, and more invasive surgeries. We will take charge of your companion and provide the most excellent care from the day of their surgery until their recovery.

Dr Vet Dominique Théron designs and performs the anaesthetic protocols. They are tailored for each patient and aim to limit the risk associated with anaesthesia as much as possible. The protocols also include pain management during the surgery and the following days. To ensure your pet's safety and well-being, your pet’s awakening is scrupulously monitored from the operating room exit until they leave the office.
