OCT, or optical coherence tomography, is based on optical interferometry. It uses a laser (light at a specific wavelength) to analyse the different layers of the cornea, the iridocorneal angle, and the retina at the micron scale. OCT allows accurate diagnoses of the cornea (ulcer, dystrophy, keratitis, etc.), glaucoma (iridocorneal angle), and the retina (analyses of the different cell layers: atrophy, dysplasia, retinitis, chorioretinitis, detachments, and vascularisation, etc.)
The examination is painless, but the animal must cooperate and remain still, so sedation is used, especially for retinal examinations.
