Cold temperatures have been used and known for therapeutic and health purposes since Homer and Hippocrates.
It developed in the second half of the 20th century, with the industrialisation of liquid air and liquid nitrogen production.
In the years following, the knowledge of the cellular response to freezing allowed us to develop cryogenics techniques using liquid nitrogen at -190°C.
The first applications were in Parkinson's disease (destruction of a specific area of the Thalamus), followed quickly by uses in ophthalmology (cataract crystalline extraction, retinal detachment). Dermatology quickly also used this technology on sensitive malignant skin tumours (melanoma).
Cryosurgery is constantly evolving, and many applications are regularly emerging.
The most common uses in veterinary surgery are for cutaneous and mucous tumours, epilation of distichiasis and ectopic eyelashes, glaucoma, and haemostasis control during surgeries.
Madeleine Vet performs this up-to-date technique, which offers many more therapeutic options.
