• Examination of the face, skull, eyelids and eyes,
• Testing different eye reflexes,
• Schirmer tear test to check tear production.
• Measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) after anaesthetic eye drops are applied.
• Fluorescein test to check the cornea and tear ducts, if needed,
• Examination with a slit lamp or biomicroscope to visualise with a high magnification of up to X16 the differents structures: the eyelids, conjunctiva, cornea, iris, lens and and antérior vitréus ,
• Direct and/or indirect ophthalmoscopy examination, usually after pupil dilation by eye drops, to inspect the lens, vitreous and retina.
• Once these tests are completed, a diagnosis and medical or surgical treatment will be offered.

However, additional examinations may be required, and specific tests like gonioscopy, chromatic pupillometry, ocular and orbital ultrasound, electroretinogram and OCT may require sedation with anaesthesia.

• Look for signs of acute eye pain such as a closed eye, excessive winking or rubing eye.
• Watch out for signs of diffuse pain like lethargy, exercise intolerance and depression, which may indicate glaucoma.
• Check for changes in eye appearance, such as opacity, redness, swelling, and dilation, as well as ocular discharge, particularly excessive clear tears or yellow or green discharge.
• Pay attention to any vision changes your pet may be experiencing, such as hesitation when walking downstairs, looking for the ball, bumping into objects, missing sidewalks or cautious behaviour under low light.
